Ingredients

For the Oat Crust

  • 1.5 cups old-fashioned oats Provides a chewy texture and nutty flavor.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour For classic crumble consistency.

For the Fruit Filling

  • 2 cups blackberries Juicy and tart.
  • 2 pieces apples, peeled, cored, and diced Adds sweetness and crunch.
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar Sweetens the fruit filling.
  • 1 tablespoon fresh sage, chopped Adds herby elegance.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Brightens fruit flavor.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8×8-inch baking dish.
  • In a bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir in melted butter and vanilla extract until crumbly.
  • Press 2/3 of the oat mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.

Cooking the Filling

  • In a saucepan, combine blackberries, diced apples, granulated sugar, chopped sage, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Cook over medium heat for 5-7 minutes until softened.
  • Spread the fruit filling over the oat crust in the baking dish.

Baking

  • Sprinkle the remaining oat mixture over the top.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  • Allow to cool completely before cutting into squares.

Notes

Wrap tightly and freeze for up to three months. Can substitute sage with thyme or try different fruits for variety.
