Ingredients

For the meat sauce

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, warm the olive oil.
  • Add the finely chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until softened and fragrant.
  • Add the ground beef, breaking it up and cooking until browned.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce, tomato paste, dried oregano, basil, and season with salt and pepper.
  • Allow to simmer on low heat for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Make the cheese filling

  • In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, large egg, grated Parmesan cheese, and a pinch of salt and pepper.
  • Stir until the mixture is smooth and creamy.

Assembly

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a 9x13 inch baking dish, start by spreading a thin layer of the prepared meat sauce on the bottom.
  • Lay down three lasagna sheets over the sauce.
  • Spread one-third of the ricotta mixture evenly over the pasta, followed by one-third of the meat sauce, and a sprinkle of one-third of the mozzarella cheese.
  • Repeat these layers two more times, finishing with a generous amount of mozzarella cheese on top.

Baking

  • Cover the baking dish with foil and place it in the oven to bake for 25 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is bubbly and golden.

Serving

  • Once it’s ready, take the lasagna out of the oven and let it rest for about 15 minutes.
  • Garnish with freshly chopped parsley before serving.

Notes

For deeper flavor, add a splash of broth into the meat sauce. A pinch of red pepper flakes can bring heat. Consider adding sautéed spinach or mushrooms for additional layers.
