Caramelized Onions

Instructions

Caramelize the Onions

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat and combine the unsalted butter and olive oil.
  • Once melted, add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Midway through, add the salt and optional sugar, then pour in the beef broth.
  • Let simmer until the onions absorb the liquid, resulting in rich, caramelized onions.

Prepare the Meatloaf

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, French onion soup mix, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, and garlic powder.
  • Gently mix until just combined, then spread the mixture onto parchment paper in a rectangle.
  • Evenly distribute the caramelized onions across the center and roll the meatloaf into a log, sealing the edges tightly.

Slow Cook the Meatloaf

  • Grease the crockpot and place the meatloaf inside, covering it.
  • Cook on LOW for 6-7 hours or HIGH for 3-4 hours until the internal temperature reaches 160°F.
  • In the last 10 minutes, place sliced Swiss cheese on top to melt.
