Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour This serves as the base, providing structure and texture.
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder The leavening agent that helps create that fluffy texture.
  • 1 tablespoon sugar A hint of sweetness that complements the sopapillas beautifully.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Balances the sweetness and enhances all the flavors.
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil Adds a nice richness to the dough.
  • 3/4 cup warm water Helps create a soft, pliable dough.

Frying and Topping Ingredients

  • Vegetable oil for frying Essential for that perfect golden-brown finish.
  • Honey for drizzling Adds a delightful sweetness and enhances the flavors.
  • Powdered sugar for dusting Finishing touch for presentation and sweetness.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt until well combined. This ensures all dry ingredients are evenly dispersed before you add the wet ones.
  • Pour in the vegetable oil and warm water. Stir until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough for about 2–3 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Cover the dough with a towel and let it rest for 20 minutes. This resting period is crucial for the gluten to relax.

Cooking

  • On a floured surface, roll the dough into a 1/4-inch thick rectangle. Cut it into 3-inch squares or triangles.
  • Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or pot to 375°F (190°C).
  • Carefully drop a few pieces into the hot oil. Fry until golden and puffed, about 1 minute per side.
  • Drain on paper towels once they’re golden.
  • While warm, dust with powdered sugar and drizzle with honey. Serve immediately.

Notes

Tips for the best sopapillas include using fresh baking powder, rolling the dough evenly, and testing the oil temperature before frying.
