Ingredients

For the Sandwich

  • 2 tablespoons butter For that golden, crispy finish.
  • 4 oz sliced Gouda cheese Creamy and flavorful, it melts like a dream.
  • 4 slices dark pumpernickel bread Rich and hearty, perfect for this savory sandwich.
  • 1/2 cup well-drained sauerkraut Tangy crunch that elevates the flavor profile.
  • 8 oz beef kielbasa sausage Hearty and robust, the star of the sandwich.
  • 2 tablespoons Russian dressing Adds a creamy and zesty touch.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Start by heating the kielbasa in a pan or on a grill until the outside is crispy. Allow it to cool slightly, then slice it diagonally into 1/4-inch pieces.
  • Spread the slices of pumpernickel on a clean surface and top each with a generous portion of Gouda cheese.
  • On each slice, spread a layer of Russian dressing over the cheese.
  • On two slices, layer the sauerkraut. On the other two slices, arrange the sliced kielbasa.

Cooking

  • Heat a griddle or skillet over medium heat. Melt the butter across the surface.
  • Place the bread slices on the griddle, toppings side up. Cover loosely with foil and toast until the cheese melts and the bread becomes crispy and golden.

Serving

  • Take one sauerkraut slice and one kielbasa slice to assemble each sandwich. Slice in half and enjoy!

Notes

For the best sandwich, ensure your skillet is adequately heated before placing the sandwich. If Gouda isn't available, Swiss cheese is a great substitute. Consider adding some sliced jalapeƱos for a bit of heat. Use gluten-free bread for dietary restrictions.
