Sloppy Joe Filling

  • 1 cup (240ml) tomato sauce Binds the ingredients, bringing harmony to the flavors.

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce Introduces savory depth, accentuating flavor.
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar Adds a hint of sweetness.

Instructions

Preparation of Puff Pastry Nests

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Roll out the puff pastry sheet slightly and cut it into four equal squares.
  • Gently shape each square into a round nest by folding the edges inward and pinching the sides.
  • Brush the edges with egg wash and bake for 12-15 minutes or until they are golden.

Cooking the Sloppy Joe Filling

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef, browning it and breaking it apart.
  • Drain excess fat and add diced onion and bell pepper. Cook for about three minutes.
  • Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and season with salt and pepper.
  • Simmer for 5-7 minutes until thickened to a hearty consistency.

Assembling & Baking

  • Once nests are golden, spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture into the center of each nest.
  • Sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese and return to the oven for another 5 minutes until melted.

Garnishing & Serving

  • Brush pastry edges with melted butter and sprinkle with fresh parsley before serving warm.

Notes

Avoid overfilling the nests to prevent a soggy bottom. Preheat the oven fully for even baking and taste the filling as you prepare, adjusting seasonings to preference.
