  • In a large bowl, sift together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Add buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry mixture and mix until well combined.
  • Stir in the boiling water until you achieve a smooth batter, then fold in the chocolate chips gently.

Baking

  • Divide the batter evenly among the prepared cake pans.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Making the Ganache

  • In a microwave-safe bowl, combine semi-sweet chocolate chips and heavy cream. Heat in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth.

Assembling the Cake

  • On a serving plate, place one layer of cake and spread a generous layer of ganache on top.
  • Repeat for the remaining layers, covering the top and sides with ganache.
  • Decorate with chocolate shavings, fresh berries, and edible flowers.

Notes

For added flavor, replace half of the all-purpose flour with cake flour. Adding a pinch of espresso powder intensifies the chocolate flavor. Make the ganache ahead for a thicker consistency.
